Scope

When a client asks for one more thing

Longer note · updated October 2026

"Could you just also…" is the most common way side work grows beyond what was agreed. It's usually not bad faith; people often don't know how long things take.

Pause before saying yes

Check the request against the scope you agreed. If it's outside it, it's new work, even if it's small.

Offer a choice

  • Add it for an agreed extra price and a new deadline
  • Swap it for something already in the scope
  • Leave it for a later job

Keep the tone easy

"Happy to do that. It's outside what we agreed, so it would be X extra and I could deliver by Tuesday. Would you like me to go ahead?" is clear and friendly.

Small favours

Doing a tiny extra now and then is your choice. Just make it a conscious one, and say it's a one-off.
